Accountability Objective:

Under the direction of the Health a& Wellness Manager, they will be responsible for the care of residents in accordance with the philosophy, objectives and standards of the retirement home.

Background/Qualifications:

Registered Practical Nurse with Ontario Certificate of Competence in good standing with the College of Nurses. They must have a current Medication certificate and must be able to communicate both written and orally in English. Two years in a similar position in a Retirement Living setting will be given preference. They will demonstrate customer satisfaction and service outcomes are a priority. They will also perform necessary lifting tasks and demonstrate strong teamwork and leadership abilities.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Participates in and contributes to the Verve Quality Improvement (VQI) Program
  • Participates in assessing the needs of individual residents and organized for the provision of care to promote maximum resident independence
  • Carries out planned assignments as designated by the Health & Wellness Manager for effective resident care, taking into account the physical, spiritual, social and emotional needs of the individuals
  • Supervises the care given by attendants or designated staff, in accordance with the resident care plans
  • Distributes medications and provides treatment to residents in accordance with current and approved standards of care, policies and procedures
  • Answers emergency calls form residents, giving assistance where possible, and contacting professional help and/or family when necessary
  • Provides direct resident care, in accordance with current and approved standards of care, policies and procedures
  • Provides resident care, and completes food service, laundry and cleaning duties as assigned
  • Complies with other infection control protocols as directed, e.g. outbreak management
  • Maintains effective communication and good interpersonal relations with residents, families, physicians and other departments
  • Co-ordinates, supervises and provides job guidance to general duty attendants
  • Maintains accurate records of nursing observations and procedures performed. Completes all required reports
  • Assists with implementation and enforcement of all policies and procedures.

  • Assists in maintaining a neat, clean and safe environment for residents and personnel. Recognized safety hazards and takes appropriate action. Reports incidents promptly
  • Assists with safekeeping of all drugs and nursing solutions in the home
  • Reports all incidents and changes in resident status to Health & Wellness Manager and subsequent shift.
  • Participates as a member of the multi-disciplinary team in the development of and implementation of a place of care for residents that supports independence.
  • Assists the Health & Wellness Manager in evaluation the performance of the attendants; assists with the appropriate documentation. Keeps the General Manager/Health & Wellness Manager informed of nay staff member whose performance is less than satisfactory.
  • Works as a team member
  • Maintains effective communication, both written and verbal with co-workers. Uses the appropriate lines of communication with supervisory staff
  • Performs other duties as assigned by the General Manager or Health & Wellness Manager

Complies with eh Occupational Health and Safety Act, Workplace Safety and Insurance Act, and Workplace Hazardous Material Information System (WHMIS). This includes recognizing health and safety hazards, reporting incidents, fulfilling responsibilities under the applicable legislation, as well as participating in in-services and fire drills.
